INTRODUCCIÓN
Este simposio será albergado por el Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM) y está organizado por el Grupo de Trabajo de Materiales Fotográficos del ICOM-CC en colaboración con el Grupo Español del Instituto Internacional para la Conservación de Obras Históricas y Artísticas (Ge-IIC), tendrá lugar 23 de septiembre de 2023, inmediatamente después de la 20ª Conferencia Trienal del ICOM-CC.
El evento está diseñado para poder establecer un debate abierto sobre lo que entendemos por fotografía en nuestros días. Esta necesidad de reflexionar sobre la definición de fotografía parte de la situación actual en la que el patrimonio fotográfico se encuentran en una encrucijada entre los analógico y lo digital.
Las definiciones actuales siguen estando típicamente asociadas a conceptos técnicos que ya no son del todo aplicables a las imágenes fotográficas de origen digital. Además, en esas definiciones se deja al margen conceptos como la capacidad de comunicación del medio fotográfico y sus particularidades como objeto complejo con múltiples capas de información.
Así pues, este cambio tiene consecuencias para el futuro de los profesionales del patrimonio cultural que trabajan con colecciones fotográficas. Si queremos trabajar por un pasado sostenible, es necesario definir claramente el objeto de ese pasado, y esta es una deficiencia importante de la fotografía, una palabra que se define principalmente en todo el mundo como una mera técnica. Sin embargo, es indudable su valor cultural y su poder como lenguaje visual, por lo que si queremos preservar las fotografías, es imprescindible establecer una nueva definición que abarque en profundidad todo su ámbito.
La actividad que se propone es un simposio de un día de duración con breves conferencias de expertos en la materia con diferentes trayectorias por la mañana. A continuación, se formarán grupos con los asistentes al simposio para debatir sobre la redefinición de la fotografía. El simposio concluirá con una mesa redonda en torno a ese concepto, qué intentamos preservar y cuáles son las estrategias que debemos poner en marcha para ello.
Con ello, la actividad no pretende ofrecer una nueva definición concreta de la fotografía, sino más bien un punto de partida para seguir debatiendo y reflexionando sobre este tema, a medida que evoluciona y sigue afectando a las distintas partes interesadas.
DESTINATARIOS
Este simposio está dirigido a todas los profesionales de la cultura que trabajen con fotografía, desde alumnos y profesionales de Historia del Arte, de Bellas Artes, de Artes y Oficio, y de Conservación y Restauración, pasando por personal de Museos y gestores de Colecciones, hasta todas aquellas personas interesados en el Arte, en la Fotografía y en la preservación de los Bienes Culturales.
Brief description
This symposium will be hosted by the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM) and organized by the ICOM-CC Photographic Materials Working Group in collaboration with the Spanish Group of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (GE-IIC). It will take place on September 23, 2023, immediately following the 20th Triennial Conference of ICOM-CC.
The event aims to encourage an open debate on what we understand as photography in our time. This need to reflect on the definition of photography arises from the current situation in which photographic heritage is at a crossroads between the analogue and the digital.
Conventional definitions of the word “photography” are still typically associated with technical concepts and, in many cases, are not fully applicable to digital-born photographic images. On the other hand, if we aim to work towards a sustainable past, it is necessary to clearly define the object of that past, and this is a major shortcoming with photography.
Indeed, photography holds undeniable cultural value, communication power, and unique characteristics that materialize as complex objects with multiple layers of information. Therefore, if we intend to preserve photographs, it is essential to establish a new definition that covers in depth all that they encompass. By doing so, the change in definition will have consequences for the future of cultural heritage professionals working with photograph collections.
The proposed activity is a one-day symposium. In the morning, there will be short lectures by experts in the field with diverse backgrounds. After a lunch break, attendees will be divided into groups to discuss the definition of photography. The symposium will conclude with a roundtable centred around the concept of photography, what we truly aim to preserve, and what are the strategies we need to put in place to do so.
The goal of this event is not to provide a concrete new definition of photography, but rather, a starting point to further debate and reflect on this topic, as it evolves and continues to affect different stakeholders.

This symposium is aimed at all cultural heritage professionals working with photography, ranging from students to professionals in the fields of art history, fine arts and conservation, collection managers and other museum and archive professionals, as well as members of the general public who are interested in art, photography, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
